Bortnet SMTP Service
What is SMTP and why should you use Bortnet?
SMTP is the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, and is used to send email on the internet.
Most internet service providers only allow you to use their SMTP server for sending email when you are on their network.
This makes it very difficult if you have to go between different internet service providers: for example, between work and home,
or if you need to send email while connected to a Wifi connection at a coffee shop. Sometimes, they don't even tell you the address of their

Why can't I use my ISP's SMTP server when I travel?
All internet service providers (ISPs) make SMTP servers available to their customers. Unfortunately,
they restrict use of those servers to computers that are on their networks. So, if you have configured
your laptop to use your ISP's SMTP server when you are at home, you will not be able to send e-mail
using that server when you travel, since you will be accessing it from a different network (a dial-up
account, a hotel, a network at work, a wireless network etc.).
Will Bortnet SMTP service work from any network?
Yes. Bortnet SMTP service authenticates your account based on your e-mail address or
on a userid and password, not on the network that your computer is using to access the internet.
Do you support secure authenticated SMTP?
Yes. All Bortnet accounts support Secure Socket (SSL) connections with password or MD5 authentication.
If I don't like the service, can I receive a refund?
Yes! If you are unhappy with the Bortnet SMTP service for any reason, we will give you a no-hassle refund
for the full amount of your payment of the previous billing cycle.
Can I use my account to send e-mail from more than one e-mail address?
Yes. If you use any of our secure authentication options, you can send e-mail through
Bortnet from multiple e-mail addresses.
Will Bortnet SMTP service work even if my ISP blocks the mail port (port 25)?
Yes. Bortnet offers SMTP service on the standard SMTP port 25, as well as on
port 2525 for those customers whose ISPs block the standard SMTP port.
Why can't I just use the SMTP server of the hotel or wireless network where my computer is plugged in?
Often it is not easy to find out the name of the SMTP server on a network where you are a visitor.
With Bortnet SMTP service, you can set you e-mail preferences once, and never have to
worry about outgoing e-mail again.
Will I still need to keep changing my e-mail preferences between work and home?
No. The networks you use at home and at work can both send e-mail using the Bortnet SMTP
server, so no need to change your e-mail preferences.
Why not just use Hotmail, MSN, or Yahoo mail when I travel?
While those services are free, they require that you use a web browser to send and receive e-mail.
They also add an ad to the bottom of every e-mail that you send. Bortnet SMTP
service can be used directly with your existing e-mail application. Bortnet SMTP service
never adds ads to customers' e-mails.
Can I send unsolicited bulk e-mail using Bortnet?
No. We do not allow unsolicited bulk e-mail to be sent from our servers.
